    The Freelancers Business Proposal Part 2

    We’re still looking at the freelancer’s business proposal to see how to get the job you really want from a client.  Here are three more steps to consider.

     

    Step Four.  Be Detailed

    You want to answer every question that client has in the proposal. This might be the only way you will be able to speak to the client so make it good. Don’t skimp on the details.  In other words, be specific.   Show you’ve done your research.  If you say you can achieve a certain sales level, back it up with evidence.  If you want to split the profits 60/40, back it up with specific reasons why the split is fair and how the work will be divided.  Offer dates, deadlines, and dollars to provide a comprehensive plan.

     

    Step Five. Show Personality 

    There are an abundance of cookie cutter business proposal templates available.  These plans may be fine to provide an outline of what to include in your proposal however you’ll have a much stronger plan if it is written with the specific business proposal plans and personalities in mind. 

     

    Step Six.  Give Ways to Follow-Up  

    Tell the client specifically how to get in touch with you or what to do next. Give them a call to action.  There are two schools of thought on how to wrap up a business plan. The first is to leave the ball in their court.  Give them a way to contact you and perhaps include a deadline.  This may work well if there is a sense of urgency or scarcity to your proposal and if you have a number of potential partners. 

     

    Conversely, the other possibility is to end the proposal with a time in which you will follow up with them. For example, “I will follow up with you at the end of the week.  Please let me know if you have any questions.”

     

    A comprehensive and professional business proposal is a way to give a positive first impression to a client. Approach the proposal keeping your potential client’s needs in mind and always provide a method for them to contact you.

    The Freelance Business Proposal: How to Respond

    Freelancers need to know how to handle the preparation of a business proposal. This will be one of the basic documents of your business.  A proposal outlines what you can do for your client according to that clients request to your business.  At times, you can initiate sending a proposal to a business that you researched as being a part of your target marketing. When approaching a new business partner or a potential client your business proposal is your first opportunity to make an impression.

     

    Step One.  Know What’s Requested

    Before writing one word, investigate carefully what you can really offer to the client.  If you are responding to a request for proposal, read it carefully several times. You want to answer all of the questions posed by the proposal.  Don’t give too little information and don’t give too much either.  Be specific; use the same terminology that you find on the request for proposal.

     

    Step Two: Do your research. 

    Learn everything you can about your potential partner or client.  How long have they been in business?  What is their specialty?  Who is their target audience?  Who have they partnered with or done business with in the past?  What do they care about?  This information is important because it will help you create a business proposal that appeals to them specifically. 

     

    For example, if your potential client is seeking blog design services from you and you’ve created blog designs for a charity they are passionate about then it would pay to include or mention that relationship in the proposal. 

     

    Step Three.  Focus on Client Needs

    Make the proposal state what’s in it for the client. While it is important to highlight your strengths and what you bring to the table, it’s even more important to word your strengths as benefits to your potential partner or client.  Tell them what’s in it for them.  If you’re an expert at email marketing and have consistently created high converting campaigns – tell them what that means to them. 

     

    Let the client know how your expertise will improve their life, solve their problems, and help them attain their goals?  This is why research is so important; you have to know what their problems and goals are.

    What Freelance Focus is for You?

    Do you have trouble trying to narrow down what you’ll do as a freelancer? I’ll share that it literally took me years to really know how ot narrow a topic.  One reason was that I was trying to bring my vast years of experience to the Internet after working in a regular offline world for decades.

     

    Internet marketing is very narrow. It’s worse than trying to write a paper in the dissertation world (If any of you have tried that).  I can be successfully done but a lot of the work is focusing, narrowing the topic and narrowing again.

     

    I think it could be worthwhile to run a mini-series here on the blog on how to look for a niche in freelancing if you’re confused. This will be great if you’re going to take my “How to Get Started in Freelancing” class that starts August 11.  I’m going to run that class probably every other month for the rest of the year. 

     

    I get lots of requests to help small business people and freelancers to get started, so this will be of help.

     

    I’ll break it down into tips.

     

    So tip #1:

    List out what you love to do. Note I didn’t say, what you already do, want to do, or should do. I said “Love to do.”

     

    If you’re starting in freelancing you have the opportunity to explore using the talents, experiences, hobbies, or background, that you might have put aside while you do your regular job.

     

    Dust off those shelved dreams and take a fresh look at them.  What would you love to do everyday of your life if you could?

     

    While considering that, think about what it would be like to take that love and turn it into a business. I’ve known lots of people who decide to take what they love and turn it into a business only to find out that the business side took the joy out of it. 

     

    But worry about that tomorrow.  Just make the list today.

     

    You will need to put the idea through some filters anyway to see the feasibility of turning it into a business. Right now, go brainstorm and have some fun while you’re at it.

    Website Tutorial #10: How to Make Your Site Look Good

    Your website is one of the most important parts of your business.  In many cases, your website will serve as the first impression you make upon your customers. In order to make the best impression possible, you will want your website to look professional and visually appealing. If your website is not visually appealing, your visitors will not stay on your site for long. The following are some tips to make your website more appealing.

     

    The color scheme of your website should be kept to complementary color tones that are easy on the eyes. If the colors you choose are too bright or garish, people may have a hard time looking at your site. Likewise, if the colors you choose clash with

    each other, it could give your visitors a headache.

     

    The fonts that you choose should be easy to read. You can certainly find some very decorative fonts, but if they have too many curly cues or other flourishes, it will be difficult to decipher some of the letters.

     

    Another thing to consider is the font size. You will want to vary the size of your headings as well as the body of your content. Having various font sizes on your page will stimulate your visitors’ eyes. If everything was the same, your page would look rather boring. However, you don’t want to take it too far and make every single line a different font size, as that would be too distracting.

     

    Many people simply scan the websites that they visit, rather than read every sentence. Using bulleted lists helps your visitors see the important information right away. This also creates space around the text. When people see space around text, they are more attracted to it.

     

    Adding some graphics to your site will greatly increase your site’s appeal. At the very least, you will want to have a heading graphic at the top of your website. If you are not artistically gifted, you can outsource this to a graphic designer. In addition to your heading, ask them to create a banner and a button logo. This way, if someone asks you for a link exchange, or if you choose to advertise on someone else’s site, you will have the graphics available.

     

    You can also use graphics on various places on your site. This will help break up the content and increase the space around the text. You will want to make sure that the graphics you use on your site are not copyrighted. You can sign up for an account at www.istockphoto.com and find photos, illustrations, videos, and more to use on your site for as little as $1 each.

     

    Making these small changes to your website can entice your visitors to stay on your website and explore the various pages and links. As you know, the longer someone stays on your website, the more likely it is that they will become your customer.

    Using a website builder, rather than design software, can make the website process quicker and easier to tackle.  If you are contemplating your choices, here are a few reasons why you should consider using a site builder.

     

    Using a site builder can save you money in the beginning.  Design software can easily run upwards of $200 or more.  Many website builders will cost less than $20 per month, and that will usually include your hosting.  And, since your website builder and web host are connected, publishing your site will be as easy as pushing a button.

    Website Tutorial #7: Three Methods to Build a Website

    On the technical side, you can choose from three methods to create your own web pages:* Do it yourself (D.I.Y.) – if you are well versed in using web page tools such as Macromedia Dreamweaver and Microsoft FrontPage to create your web pages then this option is probably the best for you.

     

     

    W3 Schools provides free web building courses.   You can learn everything you need to know to put up a site from scratch using HTML language and al of the other protocols needed to build a website. Here’s my two sense on this; even if you plan to let someone else build you site, or you select one of the easier, quicker web site builders to use, learn a bit of HTML language.

    Website Tutorial #6: How to Build a Site with FrontPage

    Let me just say that I love FrontPage and have built most of my sites with that software.  The unfortunate thing is that FrontPage is no longer being produced. You’d have to find a copy of the software on eBay or somewhere else.  So if you don’t already have it, these instructions may not work for you.  If you do have it, here’s how to get a site up. 

     

    Building a website in FrontPage is quite easy, and you do not need any prior HTML experience. Here are some basic instructions for creating a simple website.

     

    Create site: Click the icon on the top of your toolbar that looks like a blank piece of paper. From there, click site. This will create a new, blank website.

     

    Add tables: Adding tables to your site will make the design process easy. To insert a table, go to “Table”, then “insert table”. A dialog box will open and you can determine the number of columns and rows you want your table to contain.

     

    I like to use a table that is 1 column x 1 row on top (for my heading). Under that, I insert a table that is 3 columns x 1 row. This is for the “body” of my site. The column that is further to the left will contain my navigation, the middle column will contain articles and the far right column can contain ads. At the bottom of my site, I create another 1 column x 1 row table for my footer.

     

    When I create tables, I use the following specs: width is 750 pixels, cell padding is 3, cell spacing is 2, and the background color is white.

     

    Set Theme: The “theme” is the color scheme of your text, hyperlinks, background color, etc. FrontPage has several pre-installed themes. To set the theme, click on Format, then Theme. A box will open on your right, and it will display the pre-installed selections. Under the selections will be a link titled “create new theme”. Click on it to customize your own color scheme.

     

    Add Content: Now you can start adding content to your site. If you have prior experience with Microsoft Word or Publisher, you will feel right at home in FrontPage. You can type, add pictures, and everything else you would do in a normal word processing software.

     

    Add More Pages: When you are ready to add new pages to your site, you simply click on “new page” under “File”.
